Sony says PlayStation will use AI to support developers, not replace creative teams
Sony has outlined how it sees AI fitting into PlayStation game development. During Sony’s latest financial presentation, Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Hideaki Nishino said AI is already helping development teams with high-effort tasks such as hair creation, allowing developers to spend more time on richer worlds and gameplay. He also pointed to Gran Turismo’s Sophy AI as an example of machine learning creating new types of player experiences. Importantly, Nishino addressed one of the biggest player concerns around AI by stressing that the vision, design and emotional impact of PlayStation games should still come from studio talent and performers. For players, this is a key distinction. AI used as a production tool may help large studios handle repetitive tasks, but AI used to replace art direction or creative authorship would create real backlash. Sony clearly knows that. The company is also using AI in the broader PlayStation business, including PlayStation Store curation. Whether this becomes a genuine creative accelerator or a source of tension will depend on how transparent Sony remains and how much control its studios keep.
